The most meaningful gifts often sit unopened, while children crave something we keep forgetting to give. It’s simple. Always available. And it changes everything.
What children are really asking for
We think they want more – more toys, more activities, more entertainment. But notice what happens when a parent finally puts the phone down and truly looks at their child. Their shoulders drop. They exhale. They soften. Relief.
They’re not asking for more things. They’re asking for us. For our presence. Our calm. Our full attention – not divided in seventeen directions. If they keep asking for things, it’s because we’ve taught them to replace connection with consumption.
And that’s what breaks my heart: we’re giving them everything except what they need most.
The presence we forgot to budget
We plan their joy into every corner of the calendar – piano, soccer, playdates, tutoring. We fill every space like silence might swallow us whole. But the truth is, connection lives in the empty spaces. That’s where repair happens. That’s where a child learns they don’t have to perform to be worthy of love.
Presence isn’t a luxury. It’s not what we add when there’s finally time left over. It’s the foundation everything else depends on.
The gift that changes everything
This year, I’m giving something different. Not because I’ve figured it all out – but because I’ve realized what really matters.
I’m giving breath. Slowness. Eye contact not broken by notifications. Moments that aren’t rushed or rehearsed.
I’m giving my daughter a mother who can sit still. Who listens fully. Who isn’t already in tomorrow while missing today.
Because no wrapped box replaces the feeling of being seen. No toy can offer the safety of a regulated nervous system in the room.
The paradox we keep missing
The greatest gift we can give our children is our own wholeness. Our peace. Our capacity to be fully here.
When we breathe, they breathe. When we slow down, they stop bracing. When we soften, they learn the world is safe.
It’s not about being perfect. It’s about being present. About catching ourselves when we drift – and choosing to return.
If you’re ready to give the gift that truly matters – to yourself and to the children in your life – The magic of breathing / Die Magie des Atmens is your invitation to begin.
